Bankinter web and app outage disrupts digital banking as recovery proceeds in stages

Bankinter customers in Spain faced disrupted access to the bank’s website and mobile app after a technical incident began on Monday, October 26, and continued into Tuesday. The bank said it was working to restore normal access, while subsequent reporting described a recovery being carried out in stages rather than a confirmed return of every digital service.

The disruption affected the channels customers use to reach their accounts online. It did not amount to a shutdown of all Bankinter services: the bank said card payments remained available and directed customers with urgent transactions to telephone banking or its branches.

Access problems continued into Tuesday

El Confidencial reported that Bankinter’s website was unavailable or slow to load, while the app could open without allowing customers to sign in. Its Tuesday morning account described a prolonged access problem and said the bank had located the origin of the incident but had not publicly explained it.

The reports place the beginning of the disruption on Monday, although they differ in describing its timing. Some refer to the afternoon and others to the evening. There is no sufficiently clear, confirmed start time to calculate an exact duration for all affected customers.

In its own Tuesday incident notice, Bankinter said a technical incident was preventing the app and website from functioning normally. It apologised and said teams were working to resolve the problem as soon as possible. For urgent operations, it pointed customers toward telephone banking and physical offices.

El Independiente’s account described customers encountering login errors and pages that would not load. The resulting loss of normal account access interfered with routine activities such as checking balances and making transfers through the affected digital channels. The report did not establish a bank-confirmed total of affected customers.

Cards remained available as digital access recovered

The distinction between access failures and payment failures is important in this incident. Bankinter told the Spanish press that its cards continued to work, including payments in physical shops and online. The disruption should therefore not be described as a general card-payment outage.

El Español’s Invertia reported that the bank linked the incident to communications and said restoration was proceeding in waves. Bankinter also told the publication that customer data had not been compromised. That is the bank’s assessment, not an independently completed security investigation.

The available reporting does not identify the precise underlying fault, a full restoration time or a verified affected-customer count. A phased recovery can mean that access returns unevenly, so the restoration update is not evidence that every customer can already use every function normally. This report does not infer a cyberattack, a loss of funds or a connection to other banks’ recent incidents.
